Catalog Description: The purpose of this course is to provide students with an introduction to contemporary Irish literature and film, and to explore the many connections that have developed between the works of Irish writers and filmmakers in recent decades. We will also explore how Ireland has been represented by filmmakers from outside Ireland, particularly those operating from Hollywood, and how such work differs from indigenous representations of Irish life. A particular focus will be on the North of Ireland, a region that has generated many books and films that have resulted in a great deal of discussion. We will also examine representations of the urban and rural Irish Republic. On the literary side, we will consider and read from works written in both English and Irish (in translation). We will examine texts written in various genres—poetry, short story, drama, memoir, novel—to be better able to understand the range of work written by contemporary Irish writers. In addition, we will explore the political and historical contexts that relate to and often underline contemporary Irish literature.
