Lessons -- Course Web Site

Course Web Site

When you enroll in an independent study course, the course Web site takes the place of a lecturer or classroom instructor and is designed to be studied closely. The commentary in each lesson elaborates on ideas presented in the textbook, provides additional examples, and may include exercises and activities to help you learn important skills and concepts.

Suggestions for working through each lesson are outlined below:

  • Before you begin a lesson, preview what will be covered. Read the subheadings in the textbook and in the online commentary.

  • Next, read the assignment from the textbook and the online commentary for that lesson.

  • Work any suggested exercises, including optional activities or study questions.

  • Summarize the main ideas and explain important concepts in your own words. You may wish to keep a journal or notes about your responses to each lesson.

  • When you are ready to take the progress evaluation, try to answer the questions first without looking at the textbook or lesson commentary.

  • If you are uncertain of any of the answers, look them up in the textbook or lesson commentary before submitting your progress evaluation for scoring.

  • Save or record your answers to the progress evaluation questions so you will have a record of the answers you submitted.

  • After receiving your lesson report, review the comments for any answers that were incorrect and/or print out the lesson report. This report will help you study for the exams.

From the Commentary section of each Lesson, you will see, in the grey navigation box, a link to other WWW Sites. Refer to these as you see fit during your studies.

Printer-friendly Lessons have been created to:

  • speed download time for Web pages.
  • make printing course pages more efficient by using less paper.

If you ever feel lost, visit the Course Index, a comprehensive, linked index to every part of the course.
