Title: AP Calculus AB (Fall Semester)
Credit: 0.5 units
Lessons: 8 lessons, 8 submitted
Exams: 2 exams
Grading: Computer and Faculty Evaluated
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Algebra II, Geometry, and Trigonometry.
Description: Similar to a college level Calculus course, this semester course provides students with a foundation in calculus. The course emphasizes the relationship between the various forms of a function: graphs, equations, tables, and verbal expressions. Calculus is the study of change. It is a place in mathematics where we begin examining the changing situations that surround us. Calculus has two main topics: rate of change and area under a curve. In the fall semester, students will concentrate on finding rates of change, i.e. differentiation. They will review familiar functions and explore the concept of limits and differentiation. Activities and assignments with released AP items are incorporated into each unit. Since AP Calculus is designed for students to look at functions algebraically, graphically, numerically, and verbally, the evaluations and exams will also reflect this by having some taken with the use of a graphing calculator and some without. This course is the first of two half units designed to help students prepare for the College Board’s Advanced Placement Examination for Calculus AB.

Note: College Board authorized this course.

Gifted: This course is academically challenging. Any student who has an interest in the subject and has met the prerequisites (if any), may enroll.

Special Instructions: Enrollment begins the first business day of May; course starts August 31, 2009. Class size is limited. Students must have an email account to enroll and agree to participate in online discussions. The course content will be viewable two weeks prior to the start date. Enrollment in the spring semester of this course, which starts in January, begins the first business day of October.

Note: AP courses follow a specific calendar, and the normal 9-month completion policy does not apply to these courses. Therefore, students who have not completed all work by the due date for the course final (listed on the course calendar) will automatically be withdrawn from the course.
