Description: This course offers a chronological survey of Western art from the dawn of civilization through the present. AP Art History is an engrossing course that provides with students to the same degree of intensity as an introductory college art history survey. Lessons in the fall semester cover the history of art from the Paleolithic period through the late Gothic era in Northern Europe. Students will engage in critical thinking and critical analysis as they develop a contextual understanding of diverse examples of art forms, including architecture, sculpture, painting, and design. The history of art is also an examination of how and why art functions as it does, including such issues as patronage, gender, and the cultural purposes of works of art. Students will be expected to complete a rigorous course of study, with a heavy emphasis upon independent research, analysis, and academic synthesis. Successful completion of both semesters of this course will help prepare students for the College Board Advanced Placement Art History Exam.
Note: College Board authorized this course.
