Description: Understanding the government of the United States is of critical importance to American citizens. The United States is the most powerful governmental force in the world, and its actions affect every aspect of life. This course provides an overview of the essential elements of American government and politics. Students will examine its structure and institutions including the Constitution, Congress, presidency, federal bureaucracy and the federal courts. Students will study the relationship of the individual to government through political parties, interest groups, elections and media.

Successful completion of this course will help prepare students for the College Board’s United States Government Advanced Placement Exam. While not required, it is strongly recommended that students have access (online or print) to a reputable newspaper and a national magazine.

Course Note: This is a one half unit course that is offered both in the fall and the spring.

Gifted: This course is academically challenging. Any student who has an interest in the subject and has met the prerequisites (if any), may enroll.


Special Instructions: Enroll in this 16- to 18-week course in October; the course begins on January 11, 2010. Class size is limited. The course content will be available 14 days prior to the start date.

Students must have an e-mail account. Students will be required to upload documents in Word 97–2003 (.doc) or Rich Text (.rtf) format. These documents can be created in Microsoft Word or another office suite that saves in the .doc or .rtf format, such as the open-source OpenOffice or Google Docs online.

Note: AP courses follow a specific calendar, and the normal 9 month completion policy does not apply to these courses. Therefore, students who have not completed all work by the due date for the course final (listed on the course calendar) will automatically be withdrawn from the course.
