Suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people in this country. Schools have a number of important roles in the prevention of suicide in students, including providing universal prevention programs and referring students at risk for suicide to mental health professionals. The purpose of this course is to better equip educational professionals with the knowledge and skills they need to be effective in these roles.

Exploring Mental Health Issues in the Schools
Course information
This course recognizes the epidemic of increased stress among youth in today's classroom and provides an introduction to the mental health challenges of all elementary and secondary students. The focus of the course is on prevention of real classroom concerns, such as recognizing the behavioral symptoms of poor self-concepts, anger, family problems, ADHD, and bullying.

Some students are simply more resilient than others. Resilience has been connected to important life outcomes that include academic as well as social and emotional success, and resiliency is a trait that can and should be fostered in schools. The purpose of this course is to give you the information and resources you need to create a resilient classroom, one that promotes the development of resilience in each of your students.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health
Course information

This course investigates specific aberrations of normal development that impact children and their families in their home, school and community. The content will include definitions of childhood psychiatric disorders, prevalence, gender, co-morbidity, developmental course, and intervention. The course also includes applications of intervention and prevention, with a focus on a multidisciplinary team approach involving teachers, counselors, school nurses, school psychologists, social workers, families and outside providers. A particular emphasis will center on working with families and school personnel to promote wellness in children and adolescents.
