The University of Continuing Education Association (UCEA) awards Dr. William T. (Bill) Horner the Award for Excellence in Teaching and Faculty Service.
Dr. Horner has been at MU’s Department of Political Science since 2001, two years after completing his doctorate at the University of Texas.
Since 2004-5, he has developed courses for the Center for Distance and Independent Study (CDIS), the first being Political Science 1100: American Government (online), a staple course for undergraduates meeting, e.g., General Education or Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) requirements.
His second course is Political Science 4120: Politics and the Media (online), which opened in January 2007. Dr. Horner’s topical, higher-level course is based on a special interest of his, media in the political scene, serving primarily juniors and seniors, and having his own 1100 as a prerequisite.

Dr. Horner's research interests lie in exploring the relationship between presidents and the news media, the phenomena of split-ticket voting and divided government, and the intricacies of state politics. In 2005 he authored Showdown in the Show-Me State (University of Missouri Press), about the fourteen-year policy battle in the Missouri State Legislature over a law legalizing the carrying of concealed weapons. He is currently at work on a book about Mark Hanna, a trendsetting political advisor from the presidential campaign of 1896.
Our congratulations and thanks to Professor Horner on winning the Excellence in Teaching and Faculty Service Award.
